Desiging a Logo

So how does someone go about desiging a logo for a conference? Well once we had decided a theme, it was onto designing a look for the conference. My first passion is serving God, and my second passion is design - so conferences give me a chance to combine both.

THE PROCESS

The way i go about designing a logo, is to drop down a few ideas in Illustrator, and find a good font. My original idea was to go with a kinda “sketchy” image look. The idea behind that was that instead of being simply pencil sketches here on earth, we would be some more lasting (and unerasable). Unfortunately that design wasn’t going so well - not to mention it wouldn’t look that good on a t-shirt, as silkscreening would mean the “sketchy” look would probably be washed out.

So back to the drawing board!

So in thinking about the design again, i realised that a problem with lots of designs in the past, is that its designed primarily in one language, and then the other language is simply added on at the end. So to avoid that, i thought i’d work to incorporate Chinese directly into the design.

The second thing i thought about was the theme : living a legacy. I wanted the design to have some motion/or some sense of direction. And that’s where the arrows came in... (and the airplane). And after playing with the arrows, this is the design that unfolded.

(Nick, over at the Facebook MEC Group asked why there’s an airplane in the design. Two reasons actually. 1) I wanted to convey a strong sense of moving and going someplace - that a Christian life isn’t static, but a journey forward. 2) After graduation, MEC attendees may move off to HK, Singapore, Malaysia. But this shouldn’t be the end of their Christian life, but a new opportunity to live and serve the King, wherever they are.)

Here’s a gallery and explanation of past, rejected designs.
